Are you looking to lose weight in 2025? Read here to learn about one of the newest medical weight loss treatments – semaglutide compound injections – now offered at DermaTouch RN. We cover what treatment is like, how it works, and expected results.
The effectiveness of medical weight loss using semaglutide is one of the reasons more and more individuals are turning to semaglutide injections to support their weight loss goals. Semaglutide is the generic name for Wegovy and Ozempic. Originally FDA-approved to treat diabetes in 2017, semaglutide was FDA-approved for weight loss in 2021. In 2023, some 5 million Americans were prescribed semaglutide, with an estimated 40% of those prescriptions being for weight management.
DermaTouch RN is now offering semaglutide treatments to support individuals in meeting their medical weight loss goals. We recently turned to Houston-based Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Lori Swenson, who shared her insights on what semaglutide is, how it works, and what to expect in terms of results in the following Q&A.
Semaglutide compound & medical weight loss Q&A
Q: How does the medical weight loss treatment semaglutide work?
Swenson: GLP-1 slows down transit time of food in the intestines and stabilizes insulin and glucagon levels. By decreasing the transit times of food, the feeling of satiety is prolonged thus reducing the intake of food. The stabilization of insulin and glucagon levels prevent dramatic swings in blood sugar levels providing a more stable blood sugar level overall.
Q: What can someone expect during a medical weight loss consultation and treatment session?
Swenson: When a patient arrives in the clinic, we will review the patient’s medical history, draw baseline lab work, and measure BMI (body mass index) as well as body measurements. The patient will have the opportunity to ask questions, and a consent for treatment will be signed.
The first couple of injections are done in house, and once the patient is comfortable, they will be able to take the medication home and inject it themselves. A monthly visit is required to assess and take weight and body measurements and refill medication.
Q: What results are anticipated, and how quickly are they seen?
Swenson: Results vary. Semaglutide can result in a 10% to 20% reduction of body weight during the course of treatment. Some patients see more immediate results, while others’ results are more slow and steady. The variables [that impact results between individuals] are complex.
Q: Anything else that you think is important for people to consider or know?
Swenson: GLPs are a great tool to lower body weight. Diet and exercise are also important to prevent muscle wasting. Finally, the people who lose weight on these medications will most likely need to stay on maintenance dosing permanently.
