If you walk into a MedSpa or Aesthetic Service Center to request a procedure and they don’t take the time to educate you on the procedure and what it does and how it works, then proceed with caution. Not all, but many centers are all too quick to take your money, even if they believe a product or procedure isn’t the best for you. Also, it’s good to know how a product or service is impacting your body, so you can truly understand long-term effects, including potentially frustrating side effects.

At DermaTouch RN, we pride ourselves in taking the time to listen to and educate our patients. Our Founder, Renee Moschitto, feels very strongly about taking this type of approach. In a recent Q&A, she shared the following when asked why she believes educating patients is important:

“I want patients to understand what the product is actually doing to their skin and body. Take Botox, for example; we are changing the nerve endings, so the treatment amount often doesn’t stay the same from the very first time they have a treatment—the very first treatment is the strongest response. Also, how the dermal fillers function in our bodies is important to understand. Some hydrophilic products draw a lot of water to them, while others don’t, impacting the result for the patient.

We tend to stay away from certain types of products that can cause problems for patients, as well. For example, I had a patient that had talked to someone about silicone under the eyes, which is not safe and can move, so I’m glad she came in, because I had the opportunity to educate her on these issues.

So educating patients on the sorts of results they can achieve is essential. Also making sure they understand there are no FDA approved products for under the eyes, so it’s essential to have a skilled practitioner handle such injections. We have a lot of success with certain HA products under the eyes.”

As you can see with Renee’s example and explanation, patient education is important. Even if you think you don’t want to know what a product does “as long as it works,” bear in mind that each person is different and product efficacy and impact is different for each individual. Voice your questions and concerns openly to ensure you walk away with peace of mind. And if an establishment does not take the time to answer your questions, or if it does not provide answers you’re comfortable with, walk away. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
