CoolSculpting is the most popular noninvasive fat reduction treatment on the market. If you’re considering a CoolSculpting treatment, in addition to the benefits, you might also want to know, “What is the downside of CoolSculpting?” Read on to find out…
More than 17 million CoolSculpting treatments have been conducted around the globe. CoolSculpting is the only FDA-cleared fat reduction technology that uses cooling technology to reduce the number of fat cells in the diet- and exercise-resistant areas of the body.
To help us better understand the downside of CoolSculpting (hint: there really aren’t any) and how to maintain results, we turn to Certified Clinical Medical Assistant and CoolSculpting Specialist Amanda McMillan.
Why is CoolSculpting so popular?
CoolSculpting results speak to why so many turn to CoolSculpting and CoolSculpting Elite treatments. It’s a noninvasive fat loss treatment that requires no surgery, no needles, and no downtime. Plus, the treatment is relatively comfortable, with many people working, resting, or reading a book during treatment.
People see up to a 20 to 25% reduction in fat in the treatment areas within one to three months following treatment.
What’s the downside of CoolSculpting?
For those considering a CoolSculpting treatment, it’s natural to ask the question, “What is the downside of CoolSculpting?”
There really isn’t a “downside” to CoolSculpting for those that it’s a viable treatment for. However, CoolSculpting isn’t for everyone. It works best for those close to their idea weight, as McMillan points out.
“The ideal candidate for CoolSculpting is someone who is pretty close to their recommended weight but has some stubborn pockets of pinchable fat that do not fully resolve with diet and exercise.”
For those who are not yet near their ideal weight, other treatments would be more suitable or recommended. That said, once someone reaches their ideal weight, then they might consider CoolSculpting at that point in time.
A CoolSculpting specialist will work with you to assess and determine if CoolSculpting is right for you.
How can you maintain and see long-lasting results?
Though CoolSculpting results are permanent – meaning once the fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good – it is still possible to gain weight if the fat cells in the treated area grow in size.
CoolSculpting works as a fat loss treatment vs. a weight loss treatment. We are born with a certain number of fat cells that stabilize in number by the time we reach puberty. When we gain and lose weight, our fat cells are growing and shrinking in size, respectively. After a CoolSculpting treatment, the actual number of fat cells in the treatment area are reduced, so the area will shrink in size, as a result, though you might not lose much weight.
All of that said, if the fat cells grow in size, you could gain weight, or grow in size, in those areas. That’s why it’s essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as you would with any health, fat, or weight loss program.
“I always encourage all of my patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” shares McMillan, “It is important to eat healthy, stay hydrated, and remain active during and after treatment with CoolSculpting. This will ensure a stable weight and maintain long lasting results, but is also beneficial in overall health.”
According to McMillan, for some, they might turn to CoolSculpting once their diet and exercise plan has stopped working to get them through the final stretch to meet their goals. For others, they might get the jumpstart they need to initiate their body goals with CoolSculpting.
“My preference is to fine tune with CoolSculpting once a patient has plateaued with diet and exercise, but I have had some people successfully use CoolSculpting as a jumpstart to their body goals. It is important to understand that CoolSculpting is not a replacement for diet and exercise, but a beautiful compliment to those efforts you put in each day.”
How does CoolSculpting work?
CoolSculpting using cryolipolysis to freeze fat cells in treatment areas. Paddles are used to target the cooling technology on the selected treatment areas. The fat cells are then frozen and naturally eliminated from the body. Once the fat cells are eliminated, they are gone for good.
Results can be seen in as little as three weeks, with maximum results seen within two months.

- Under the chin (double chin)
