Wondering how not to be disappointed with your Juvederm filler treatment? We ask RN Injector Nicole Sarmiento for her expertise and insights…

Dermal fillers treatments have exponentially increased in recent years. In fact, they’re the second most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatment in the US, behind Botox. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, approximately 2.6 million dermal filler injection treatments were completed in 2018, and in 2021, the dermal filler market size was valued at 5.05 billion USD. The market is projected to boost to 8.79 billion USD by 2029.

So, what’s all the fuss about?

Well, ask anyone who’s fallen in love with dermal filler treatments, and they’ll likely say that dermal fillers support a myriad of concerns, from adding volume to provide a more youthful appearance to creating more symmetry between each side of the face to enhances the lips and contouring the chin and jawline. Regardless of what your concern is in terms of volume loss, asymmetry, thin lips, lines and wrinkles, and more, dermal fillers treatments can help alleviate these concerns with quick and immediate results.

So, if you’re in the market for a dermal filler treatment, how can you ensure you walk out loving your results vs. the alternative?

We turned to Houston-based Registered Nurse, Allergan Trainer, and Injector, Nicole Sarmiento, who specializes in cosmetic treatments, including Botox and dermal fillers. Sarmiento shares her expertise on dermal filler treatments and steps you can take to not be disappointed.

11 Tips: Don’t be disappointed with your Juvederm filler treatments

In the next section, Sarmiento breaks down the following tips:

  1. Know the types of fillers available (e.g., Juvederm filler, Restylane, etc.)
  2. Educate yourself about the dermal filler treatment experience
  3. Clarify the dermal filler and overall results you’re seeking
  4. Manage expectations: Know how much filler to expect
  5. Research dermal filler pricing to avoid surprises
  6. Know your budget for maintenance
  7. Ask questions if you have doubts
  8. Seek a certified clinic or provider
  9. Trust and listen to your provider
  10. Don’t provider hop
  11. Review pre and post filler treatment paperwork

1. Know the types of fillers available

Sarmiento suggests, “As you explore dermal filler treatments, it’s good to know what’s available to you. Some of the most well-known dermal fillers on the market are Juvederm and Restylane, which are both made from hyaluronic acid (HA).”

HA is a naturally occurring substance in the body that decreases as we age. HA fillers work by drawing water to the treatment areas to add volume. HA fillers have been FDA-approved since 2003. Unlike many fillers made from other substances, HA fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme if you don’t like the results.

Many filler lines have a number of fillers within the same family. The Juvederm family, for example, includes Ultra,  Ultra Plus, Volbella, Voluma, Vollure, and Volux. Restylane includes Restylane-L, Silk, Lyft, Defyne, and Refyne.

Other fillers are made from calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-l-lactic acid, collagen, polymethylmethacrylate, and autologous fat injections. Your dermal filler injector will be able to walk you through the filler options available for the results you desire.

For the purpose of this post, we will focus on Juvederm dermal fillers.

2. Educate yourself about the dermal filler treatment experience

Your injector will inject the dermal filler into the treatment area. Many fillers include lidocaine, so there’s little discomfort as the dermal filler is injected into the skin.

“Additionally, you might be given pre-treatment numbing cream once you arrive at the clinic for your dermal filler treatment, which I recommend,” shares Sarmiento.

3. Clarify the dermal filler and overall results you’re seeking

Are you looking to add volume to your cheek areas? Do you want to fill in nasolabial folds? Maybe you want to fill and smooth the chin area? Or maybe you’re looking for lip fillers for fuller lips?

“Have an idea of the results you’re seeking when you go in for your Juvederm dermal filler treatment consult, so the injector can work with and guide you in the best dermal filler products and services to achieve your goals,” suggests Sarmiento, “A skilled injector will be able to guide you on whether or not your goals are reasonable, and which Juvederm filler options will help you achieve your goals.”

4. Manage expectations: Know how much filler to expect

Sarmiento indicate that it’s not uncommon for you to sometimes need more filler than expected for certain areas, like the jawline, cheeks, and chin. To appropriately contour these areas, it can easily take 2 to 3 syringes for each area. With that said, it’s also best to work with an injector to be conservative and build results over time. Your injector is your best guide to inform you about how much or how many syringes of filler you’ll need for each treatment area.

5. Research dermal filler pricing to Avoid Surprises

“You don’t want pricing alone to dictate who you choose for your dermal filler treatment. However, several reputable clinics and dermal filler injectors offer monthly specials or package discounts on dermal fillers and Botox. At DermaTouch RN, for example, we offer regular monthly specials on Juvederm and Botox packages.”

In addition, the companies that make dermal fillers often have membership programs that offer discounts for points received on product purchases. Allergan, the makers of Juvederm and Botox, offers the Alle program that is free to join. Members receive points for each Juvederm and Botox purchase, as well as other Allergan products and treatments, that can be used towards your future purchases.

Dermal filler treatment pricing varies depending on the filler used, the amount of filler used, the number of areas being treated, and the treatment provider. Some fillers cost more than others, and the price is often driven by brand recognition and product efficacy.

6. Know your budget for maintenance

A Juvederm dermal filler treatment can cost anywhere from $400 to $3000 and more. With time, dermal filler dissolves, so if you love the results, you’ll want to keep up your dermal filler treatments. To do so, you’ll want to ensure you budget accordingly.

In terms of efficacy, Sarmiento shares, “Dermal fillers last anywhere from six months to two years, on average. When you speak to your dermal filler injector you’re considering, you can ask for an estimate on your first treatment and also have a discussion of what might be required for you to maintain your results over time. To help you budget, you might choose to start with less filler initially and build over time as an option. It will also allow for gradual, natural-looking results.”

7. Ask questions if you have doubts

Dermal fillers are a safe and effective cosmetic treatment used by millions of people around the world. Collagen-based dermal fillers have been FDA-approved since 1981, and HA fillers have been FDA-approved since 2003.

“If you have any questions or hesitations about getting a Juvederm or any dermal filler treatment, take the time to assess your concerns and write down your questions. Then, speak with the dermal filler injector you choose, so you can ask all your questions to put your mind at ease,” Sarmiento continues, “If you still feel uncertainty, then give yourself some time until you feel comfortable and ready to get a Houston dermal filler treatment.”

8. Seek a certified clinic or provider

“If you’re looking for a Juvederm treatment, then look for an Allergan-certified clinic or injector,” Sarmiento suggests, “An Allergan certification shows that the injector has the know-how and knowledge of how Juvederm fillers work.”

Regardless of the type of filler you choose to go with, ask what certifications and training the injector you’re considering has. Also look at online reviews and take the time to talk to the injectors you’re considering. You want to feel safe with and trust the clinic you choose for your dermal filler treatment.

9. Trust and listen to your injector

On this topic, Sarmiento agrees with what her colleague Lori Swenson shared in a recent post, “Listening to your provider and their guidance is also a good idea. For example, many will come in wanting filler for nasolabial folds, though they need to consider that nasolabial folds begin to form due to a loss of volume in the mid-face region. Therefore, it’s often best to treat the midface region before treating the nasolabial fold region to achieve the most natural-looking results.”

10. Don’t provider hop

Sarmiento also aligns with her above referenced colleague when she shares, “Pick a provider and stick with them – don’t spa-hop. Spa hopping can lead to frustration and prevents you from building results over time with the same provider.””

11. Review Pre and Post Filler Treatment paperwork

“When you schedule your Juvederm filler treatment, you should receive instructions on what to do to prepare. If you don’t, ask for it,” states Sarmiento.

You should also receive post care instructions before or during your treatment. Typically, the paperwork you receive will also include what to expect following your treatment.

The day of your treatment and for one week following, for example, you should avoid taking aspirin, non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of Vitamin E supplements to minimize symptoms like bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

Walk Away Happy with Your Juvederm Treatment

These tips will support you in selecting the right provider and walking away from your Juvederm dermal filler treatment with confidence. It’s also best to request a consultation with the providers you’re considering to determine who you feel the most comfortable with to get the best short and long term results.
