With hurricane season among us in Houston, and Hurricane Harvey lurking and ready to make landfall this weekend, we want to ensure your safety here at DermaTouch RN. Personal safety is first, of course. So once you have that covered, we want you to be able to take care of that lovely skin, as well!

Per weather stations, Hurricane Harvey is expected to hit Texas as a Category 3 storm, one of the worst since 1999’s Hurricane Bret, Friday evening into early Saturday. Below are some tips to keep you and your family (and your skin) healthy and safe this weekend and throughout the hurricane season.

Remain calm: Getting stressed doesn’t help anyone when a hurricane arrives. It impacts your ability to function and your overall health, including your skin. Do what you can to prepare beforehand so you can more easily remain calm during the storm.

Keep fresh water handy: Water is important for hydration and cleanliness. Potable water supplies can get contaminated when it rains for days, so put pots out to collect water and keep water pots close to where you need it, like in the bathroom to flush the toilet and wash your hands. Not to mention, you need fresh water to drink!

Wash anything and everything: If you don’t have electricity for days or weeks, then you’ll want to ensure your home, laundry, pets and yourself are squeaky clean before the storm hits.

Be ready if the lights go out: Stock up on candles, lighters, and flashlights and have them handy and easily available if the lights go out, including by sinks to properly wash your face and hands.

Go to the ATM: Before the storm hits, get plenty of cash out of the bank so you have it on hand when you need it. When the electricity goes out, the only option to pay for items might be cash due to credit card machines being down, etc.

Have board games handy: To keep yourself and the children entertained, have board games or cards available with a couple flashlights close by. This will help pass the time and take your mind off the storm.

Charge your personal devices: Charge all of your personal devices, such as a computer, cell phone, notepad, and so on, prior to the storm. When the electricity goes out, use only one device at a time so you have means of communication with the outside world for a longer period of time.

These are just a few tips to support you and your family during a hurricane. For more information, do an online search for “hurricane safety.”
