It’s that time of year when many of us are hitting the gyms to get our bodies in shape for that trip to the beach or the many trips to the community pool.

We all know that working out is great for our physiques, but did you know it’s also great for our skin? The increased blood flow supports the release of toxins from our system (largely in the form of sweat) and also sends nutrients and oxygen to our skin, which supports a healthy glow. At the same time, if we don’t care for our skin before, during, and after working out, there can be some not-so-pleasant side effects, including chafing and acne. Skin conditions, such as eczema and rosacea, can also be negatively impacted by working out if you aren’t mindful of how you take care of your skin. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to avoid any negative impact on your skin while working out.

Tips to protect your skin while working out:

  1. Wash that skin! Before working out, cleanse your face to avoid an increase in acne or clogged pores. After you workout, shower as soon as possible to do the same. At the same time, be mindful if you have skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Showering too much can make the condition worse. Using a non-irritating moisturizer as soon as you shower can help. We have top-of-the-line skin care products from companies such as Obagi and SkinMedica to support you with such endeavors at DermaTouch RN.
  2. Don’t share with others. Working out is one activity where sharing isn’t a great thing. Use your own mats and towels when going to the gym or studio. This will help you avoid picking up other people’s gunk (bacteria, germs, etc.) that can negatively impact your skin, as well as your overall health.
  3. Turn down the temperature. When you have skin conditions that get worse when the skin is flushed, such as rosacea, choose to workout in a cool environment as to not make the condition worse.
  4. Use sunscreen. When you’re working out in the sun, be sure to use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 that’s “broad-spectrum” and “water-resistant.” Reapply immediately after sweating.
