How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Laser tattoo removal is the most effective, non-invasive method of tattoo ink removal. The lasers used at DermaTouch, RN for tattoo removal represent the latest technology and are designed to effectively target the ink that resides just under your skin. Using different wavelengths of light to address the many different colors used in tattoos, the laser breaks down the ink particles into smaller fragments which are then removed through your body’s natural cleansing process. This cleansing process generally takes between four to six weeks to remove the maximum amount of ink pigment. Scroll down to check out the before and after pictures of PicoSure patients.

What to Expect
For this procedure, your DermaTouch laser tattoo removal specialist will give you a pair protective eye shields. Then they will test your skin’s sensitivity to find the most effective laser setting for the treatment. The laser passes pulses of intense light through the top layers of your skin, and is only absorbed by the tattoo pigment.
The smaller the tattoo the fewer pulses are needed. Larger ones will need more pulses to break down the ink particles. To totally remove a tattoo, it often requires a series of treatments. After each treatment, your tattoo will become increasingly lighter.
Will laser tattoo removal leave a scar?
There is a small chance that you will have some permanent scarring. It depends on where the tattoo is located, the kind and color of ink used, and what type of skin you have. Never let anyone remove your tattoo with a laser that is not made for tattoo removal. There is a much greater chance of scarring when the wrong laser is used. The PicoSure laser is designed especially for tattoo removal and will provide the best results.
How does the tattoo look after a laser treatment?
Immediately after the laser treatment your tattoo looks much lighter because the water has evaporated from the skin. This effect disappears after a few minutes then the area becomes swollen and pink. Deeper treatments may leave some pinpoint bleeding and scabbing.
Is laser tattoo removal painful?
Some people may find laser tattoo removal uncomfortable, but not nearly as uncomfortable as getting the tattoo! Most of our patients don’t need any anesthesia. Depending on where your tattoo is, your DermaTouch nurse may apply a topical anesthesia cream.
How long between treatments?
The average time between laser treatments is three to four weeks. It depends on how quickly the area heals. It usually takes around 7-10 days. The more time you give for your immune system to remove the fragmented ink particles, the fewer treatments it will likely take. We recommend you wait at least four to six weeks, but you may wait longer.
What aftercare is needed with a laser treatment?
Immediately after your laser treatment, a topical antibiotic is applied with a light dressing. You may remove the dressing the next day and wash the area with soap and water. You can leave it open or you can apply more ointment and a light dressing . We recommend you use dressings if there’s any bleeding from the area after your treatment.
Can DermaTouch remove just part of my tattoo?
Yes. We can treat small targeted areas and only remove a portion of your tattoo. (See Tattoo Cover Up below)

Before & After
A Better Way to Remove Tattoos
For many centuries, tattooing has been a cultural tradition, used to show affiliations and rank, survival accounts, or simply to identify an individual. More recently, tattoos have become a popular way to demonstrate individuality, artistic expression or independence.
While the number of individuals getting tattoos has increased, so too has the need for improved tattoo-removal methods. Luckily, tattoo-removal has never been easier. Tattoo removal with the PicoSure Laser is an excellent treatment option. Tattoo removal treatment options have evolved from potentially harmful treatments such as acid removal, excision and dermabrasion to less damaging aesthetic lasers.
For more than 20 years, Q-switched lasers were considered the industry standard for tattoo removal and skin spot removal. The PicoSure laser uses ultra-short pulses to create a photomechanical impact that shatters the ink or pigment into tiny dust-like particles. Because the particles are so small, they are more easily absorbed and eliminated through the body’s natural processes.
- FDA approved for tattoo removal in December 2012.
- PicoSure laser technology delivers energy to the tattoo ink in “picoseconds,” which is significantly faster than older technology delivering energy in nanoseconds. Faster energy delivery = quicker clearing of tattoo ink in fewer sessions.
- Less time is needed between PicoSure treatments (3-4 weeks) versus existing lasers requiring 6-8 weeks.
- Easily removes blue, green, orange and yellow inks, previously the toughest colors to remove with existing nanosecond technology.
- Studies reveal greater than 75% overall ink clearance in only one to two treatments.
- Tattoo removal with the PicoSure Laser requires half as many treatments as older laser tattoo-removal technology still on the market.
