What is Botox, how does it work, and why are more and more millennials choosing Botox for the first time in recent years?

Neuromodulators, like Botox, are the number one minimally invasive cosmetic treatments on the market. Since its FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002, people have been turning to Botox to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Currently, millennials, in particular, are turning to Botox for the first time as both a treatment to turn back the hands of time and as a preventative treatment to stop wrinkles from forming before they begin.

Suppose you’re a part of the millennial generation considering a Botox treatment. In that case, in addition to how Botox works, you might be curious about what to consider when seeking a Botox treatment for the first time.

We recently asked San Antonio-based Advanced Practice Nurse and Nurse Injector Carrie Moschitto and Nurse Injector Vanessa Sandoval their perspectives on why millennials are now turning to Botox for the first time and what they should consider when they do.

Millennials turn to DermaTouch RN for Botox and aesthetic services

According to Moschitto, millennials comprise a large portion of DermaTouch RN’s client base for Botox Cosmetic – estimated to be around 40%. Further, millennials have tended to be involved in preventative care and maintenance at a younger age. As a result, it’s estimated they comprise closer to 50% or more of DermaTouch RN’s total aesthetic services base.

Aesthetic services at DermaTouch include a variety of treatments, from Botox and dermal fillers to laser treatments and chemical peels.

How does Botox work?

Before we dive into the Q&A section of this post, let’s talk briefly about how Botox works. Botox is a neuromodulator that’s injected into the muscles of specific areas of the face. Once injected into the treatment area, Botox freezes the muscle, causing it to relax. As a result, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles improve.

Botox is FDA-approved to treat the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet, and platysmal bands. Results can often be seen within five days, with full results seen within two weeks. Results last for an average of four months, at which time more Botox injections will be required to maintain results.

Now, let’s find out why millennials are turning to Botox, as well as some tips on what millennials should consider before giving Botox a try.

Why are millennials turning to Botox for the first time?

Millennials were raised at the perfect time to be introduced to Botox Cosmetic and its enormous growth in popularity.

“Millennials – born between 1981 and 1996 – range in age from 28 to 43 years old at this point,” shares Moschitto, “Botox was approved for cosmetic use originally in 2002. As such, millennials essentially came of age during a time period when access to Botox was blossoming worldwide. In the years since the approval, Botox has proven to be a reliable approach to both prevention and correction of lines.”

In addition to its growth, Moschitto also points out that Botox became normalized and less taboo by the time millennials were old enough to consider the treatment.

“Although Botox was available to younger Gen Xers in young adulthood, there was still more of a taboo associated with Botox treatment at that time. Millennials have benefitted from observing the incredible outcomes associated with Botox treatment, as well as from increasing comfort in the relatively minimal risk profile associated with treatment. Furthermore, although Botox can have nice outcomes throughout most of our adulthood, millennials are now at or reaching the age that Botox tends to have the most impressive outcomes, which is generally between the mid-thirties to the mid-fifties.”

Sandoval further points out that millennials are invested in self-care and wellness and seek out preventative skincare options, and Botox is more accessible than ever.

“Millennials are proactive about self-care and wellness, including skincare, ” shares Sandoval, “They are aware that preventative Botox helps soften fine lines before they become deeper. Botox has also become more affordable and widely available through med spas, making it easier for younger people to try.

Additionally, the rise in social media has increased the desire to always be ready for the camera.

According to Sandoval, social media has amplified the focus on looking camera-ready at all times. With selfies, filters, and video calls, younger individuals are more aware of fine lines and facial expressions. The influence of Instagram and TikTok has contributed to Botox being normalized by influencers and celebrities.

Is there anything millennials should know or consider before getting Botox for the first time?

Moschitto highlights the safety and efficacy of Botox and also that it’s important to choose your Botox provider wisely:

“Botox is the most common medical aesthetic procedure performed. It has a low side effect profile and can provide eye-catching results. It compliments a good skin care regimen to noticeably slow the aging process, which is ultimately what this is all about. It is important to be selective about where you get your treatments performed to ensure that you are being treated with the most up-to-date techniques and legitimate products.”

It’s also a good idea to schedule a consultation with your local MedSpa or Botox provider, as Sandoval shares:

I recommend scheduling a free consultation. In our office at DermaTouch RN, we do free skin consultations. These are very informative and educational as one learns so much about their skin and will have the knowledge needed to be able to develop a plan to help age gracefully. We know we are all going to age, but why not be proactive and do things that will help slow down the progression of the aging process?”

Botox is here to stay

Nowadays, Botox is seen as an integral part of a routine beauty regimen, like facials or laser treatments,” shares Sandoval, “Millennials, and even the later generations, are more interested in skincare, as well. Medical-grade skincare, along with Botox treatments, are becoming the norm. I wouldn’t say this is a trend, as trends fade. These treatments are here to stay.”

Schedule a Botox consultation

If you’re in search of “Botox near me,” seek out a clinic that offers consultations to help you determine if a Botox treatment is right for you. At DermaTouch RN, you can schedule a free skin consultation, where a Skin Care Specialist can assess your skin and identify the best course of treatments for you.
