How does CoolSculpting work?
The technical name for CoolSculpting is cryolipolysis. Through cryolipolysis, cold is applied, and the cells respond by breaking down fatty tissue. Over time, the fat cells gradually die and are naturally eliminated by the body through its lymphatic system. Meanwhile, the surrounding muscles, nerves, and tissues of the treatment area are left unaffected.

What can you expect during and following a CoolSculpting treatment?
During treatment, individuals report minimal to no discomfort. Many read, work, or rest during treatment.
Some side effects can occur following treatment, including temporary redness, bruising, swelling, tingling, firmness, numbness, and pain. These tend to go away relatively quickly. In rare instances, side effects can persist for a few days or up to three weeks following treatment, though they eventually resolve on their own.
“Typically, you can expect some tenderness in the [treatment] area for a couple of days. Certain areas do stay numb a little longer than other body areas, yet this should not bother the client – it will just feel a bit odd for a temporary period of time,” shares Pedroni.
How long does it take to see CoolSculpting results?
Per Pedroni, it’s possible for some patients to see CoolSculpting results and a reduction in fat as early as 4 to 6 weeks after treatment. “I like to explain to clients that, typically, you can start to notice a difference within 4 to 6 weeks, and full results come 90 days after their last treatment.”
It is possible for the body to metabolize fat cells for up to six months following the initial treatment, at which time full CoolSculpting results can be seen.
How much fat can you lose with CoolSculpting?
People can expect to see a 20% to 25% reduction in fat in treatment areas. Results vary between individuals based on various factors, like the treatment area and individual body chemistry.
What are the pros of a CoolSculpting treatment?
With CoolSculpting, the fat reduction results from a noninvasive procedure, unlike liposuction. Being a completely non-surgical procedure, there are no needles, surgery, or downtime during and following a CoolSculpting treatment. As a result, people typically return to normal routines relatively easily and quickly. Many patients even go back to work on the same day and continue their typical workout routine.

“CoolSculping results are maintained longer with a healthy lifestyle,” Pedroni explains, “Always remember you can gain weight after any type of body contouring procedure, whether it be surgical or non-surgical.”
Fat loss vs. weight loss
CoolSculpting is a fat-loss treatment. It’s not a weight loss treatment. When we gain and lose weight, our fat cells expand and shrink, respectively.
We are born with a certain number of fat cells that stabilize and don’t change over time. With CoolSculpting, fat cells are eliminated from treatment areas, therefore reducing fat inches in those areas. Fat cells do not come back, since “we do not grow or reproduce new fat cells after they are frozen, die, and are eliminated from the body.” However, if the fat cells that are remaining expand, it’s possible for someone to gain weight.
