Leg Veins and Facial Vessels
At DermaTouch RN, we often treat clients dealing with bothersome leg veins and facial veins, referred to as varicose veins and spider veins.
Varicose veins are enlarged veins that often appear red or blue in color and bulging. Spider veins are a smaller version of varicose veins. Both spider and varicose veins can cause swelling, pain, and itching.
What causes varicose and spider veins?
Weakened or damaged valves in veins are typically the cause of varicose veins. When the heart pumps blood throughout the body away from the heart via arteries, veins then carry the blood back from the body to the heart. This flow back to the heart often goes against the flow of gravity (i.e. from your legs back to your heart). Due to this, sometimes, the valve of the vein can weaken allowing blood to leak back into the vein. As the blood collects and makes the veins bigger, varicose veins are formed. Spider veins are also caused by this back-up of blood, though they can also be caused by aging, sun exposure, injuries, and hormonal changes.
What are risk factors for varicose veins?
Varicose veins occur in 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men in the United States, with half of the population 50 and older being impacted. Thus, increasing age is a risk factor for varicose veins as the veins weaken and don’t work as well as they once did. Other risk factors include:
- Genetic history (if a family member has issues with varicose veins, then other family members have an increased risk for vein issues)
- Hormonal changes due to puberty, menopause, birth control pills, and pregnancy
- Lack of exercise
- Sun exposure
How can Varicose and Spider Veins be treated?
At DermaTouch RN, we experience success with laser vein therapy. We use the Sciton BBL (Broad Band Light) 1064nm laser to help reduce the appearance of spider and varicose veins. The 1064nm allows us to treat deeper vessels on the legs and face. The laser works by creating light energy with an innovative flash lamp technology that is passed through smart filters to treat several types of skin conditions, including spider and varicose veins.
