Medical Spa news and beauty trends that ramped up in 2022 and are on track to continue through 2023…

The MedSpa industry has gained in popularity over the last couple of decades, even if it was a relatively slow start initially. With the FDA cosmetic approval for Botox in 2002, more and more began turning to their local clinics offering aesthetic services seeking the magic of Botox to help them turn back the hands of time.

With exposure to Botox, consumers were exposed to other treatment services, like dermal fillers and laser treatments, with positive outcomes. Sites like RealSelf made it easier to view real-life results of common treatments, popularizing them. Further, today, the grand marketing efforts of powerhouse pharmaceutical companies like Allergan, the makers of Botox, Juvederm, and CoolSculpting, have begun to normalize such procedures for consumers. Now that such services to enhance our beauty are becoming destigmatized, the MedSpa industry is booming.

We asked San Antonio-based Nurse Injector and Advanced Practice Nurse, Carrie Moschitto, MSN, about her perspectives on Medical Spa news and trends that ramped up in 2022 and are on track to continue through 2023.

Medical Spa News and Beauty Trends for 2023

Trend #1: MedSpas are gaining respect and popularity

Through 2026, the North America medical aesthetic market is projected to grow by more than 10% each year. Between 2017 and 2020, the number of non-surgical aesthetic procedures worldwide grew by close to 2 million

Moschitto shares that, though the number of MedSpas have increased dramatically over the last five years, sustainability and success of a MedSpa lies in its ability to achieve results. “Although access to treatments is critical, ultimately success within the MedSpa industry is largely results driven [and relies on repeat business and word of mouth referrals]. At DermaTouch RN, for example, with our extensive knowledge of medical aesthetics and long history in the industry, we are able to offer our patients a wide selection of effective treatments that are delivered by experienced hands. This is essential for any MedSpa’s success.”

Trend #2: People continue to prefer minimally invasive cosmetic treatments over surgery when possible

When it comes to taking care of one’s skin and beauty, people prefer avoiding going under the knife whenever possible.

Moschitto shares, “There are certainly situations where surgical intervention is more appropriate. However, our patients routinely express interest in pursuing minimally invasive treatments, where possible, because the recovery tends to be quicker and complications tend to be more benign. Ultimately, this allows our clients to resume their normal activities more quickly. Finally, if the patient is able to delay surgical intervention to a point later in life, the likelihood of requiring repeat surgical interventions is significantly reduced.“

Per the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine, the top five non-invasive treatments are:

  • Botox
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Hair Removal
  • Nonsurgical Fat Reduction
  • Photorejuvenation

Trend #3: There an increased focus on wanting natural-looking results

As widespread medical spa news indicates, with social media continually growing, for better or worse, it’s undeniable that there’s a link between self-worth and body image and social media. MedSpas provide the services needed for people to put their best foot forward, which means, in today’s world, looking like the best, natural version of ourselves–no more overfilled lips or frozen looks.

At the same time, as Moschitto warns, it’s essential that patients are getting the ideal treatments based on their demographics and individual needs.

“Social media has become a huge force in the beauty and aesthetics industry. In many ways, this has dramatically increased knowledge regarding options for treatments, but at the same time, some treatments are promoted with very little attention to the ideal patient population. At DermaTouch RN, we pride ourselves on delivering treatments with natural-looking results.”

To get those natural-looking results, there are numerous treatment types available, and it’s necessary that providers appreciate which treatments are best for what the patient’s needs and priorities are.

“There are now 5 FDA approved neuromodulators that can be utilized for wrinkle reduction and a nice aesthetic enhancement. With respect to dermal fillers, there are now multiple different product lines produced by different manufacturers, many offering various products within their lines that are focused on different targeted results. Finally, with respect to aesthetic skin treatments, there are multiple cosmetic-grade and medical-grade products as well as treatments that have gained popularity in recent years. At our clinic, the focus is on utilizing the correct product in the correct application to achieve the best results for our patients.”

Trend #4: More–and younger–women are turning to fillers, Botox, and laser therapy

A survey by SkinSpirit focused mostly on women between 25 and 44 years old revealed that:

  • over 70% of women have or would consider getting Botox, fillers, or laser treatments
  • 45% of women indicate that how they view these treatments has been influenced by social media and platforms like Zoom
  • Over 70% of women said that long-lasting treatments are important because they shave time off day to day routines
  • 34% of women said they like the confidence boost they get from treatments

Moschitto and the team she works with have seen this trend firsthand. “It is evident in our day to day clinic operations that younger women are turning to fillers, Botox, and medical grade skin care treatments. There is a focus on pre-juvenation in this age group to slow, delay, or prevent the signs of aging. That’s why we offer an array of services that can be tailored to more corrective or preventative results, depending on the needs of our clients.”

Trend #5: Men are turning to aesthetic and cosmetic treatments more frequently

Though the percentage of women that get Botox continues to significantly exceed the percentage of men that do, it still holds true that more men are turning to Botox, with a 400% increase in Botox treatments in men since 2000.

According to Moschitto, aesthetic services for men have become more normalized with time. “As with women, men see phenomenal results with aesthetic Botox and filler treatments as well as aesthetic skin treatments. We have seen a gradual rise in male clients over the years as well as progressive interest in the different treatment types.”

Trend #6: Sexual aesthetics are on trend and no longer taboo

Sexual aesthetics–an arm of medical aesthetics that has been somewhat controversial in the recent past–are becoming less taboo and once again gaining traction. Sexual health and wellbeing is vital, and when women need support in this area, having treatments that are minimally or non-invasive can do wonders vs. needing to go under the knife.

“As with facial aesthetics, the sexual aesthetics industry has grown immensely,” shares Moschitto, “Sexual aesthetics treatments offer an enhancement with reduced down-time and recovery compared to surgical intervention. Furthermore, minimally invasive or non-invasive treatments can improve tissue integrity and lead to reduced scar tissue formation.“

Trend #7: CoolSculpting continues to be the #1 nonsurgical fat reduction and body contouring option of choice

The nonsurgical fat reduction intervention, CoolSculpting, has soared in popularity over the past few years, and it shows no signs of slowing. This is seen firsthand at DermaTouch RN Houston and San Antonio–the top provider of CoolSculpting in Texas and one of the top in the nation.

As Moschitto points out, many turn to CoolSculpting compared to other nonsurgical fat reduction treatments due to the easy recovery, treatment, and visible results. “Surgical interventions certainly will continue to play a role for fat reduction and body contouring procedures. However, CoolSculpting has consistently offered a viable alternative to surgical procedures for many patients since it was originally FDA cleared. While there are other non-invasive approaches, patients continue to seek out CoolSculpting due to the comfort and ease of the treatment, the easy recovery, and the results that it delivers.”

Trend #8: SkinMedica continues to launch innovative medical-grade products

SkinMedica continues to prove that they’re the powerhouse to beat when it comes to medical grade skincare. As Moschitto points out, they continue to release new products backed by science and results.

“SkinMedica is a leader in the medical-grade skin care arena. Their products provide an elegant solution to various different concerns regarding management of aging skin and boast extensive scientific research to back their claims. In 2022, they released their innovative Firm and Tone body lotion, which has proven to work remarkably well for smoothing the skin surface both visually and to the touch. In 2023, they plan to release a game changer pigment correction system, so keep your eyes open for more information regarding this release.”

Trend #9: MedSpa Memberships are on the rise

As more and more people turn to MedSpas to support their beauty and cosmetic needs, medical clinics are responding to the call by offering MedSpa memberships. Memberships offered are often based on a monthly payment that allows you to get discounts on multiple services and products.

Per Moschitto, “MedSpa memberships often provide access to a multitude of different services provided by the facility. In the world of non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments, the use of a broad selection of treatments provides the best outcomes. For instance, while Botox and other neuromodulators may reduce the appearance of lines temporarily, aesthetic treatments like microneedling, Vivace, Photofacials, and Ultherapy can stimulate collagen and actually improve the skin itself.”

An example of a Membership Program is DermaTouch RN’s Aesthetic Club that allows you to pay a low monthly rate per month that you can bank and use towards future treatments. With the membership, you get deep discounts on treatments and retail items.

“At DermaTouch RN, our clients love our membership program. They can receive deep discounts on not only injectables, but also all of our aesthetic services and retail items. Many of our clients enjoy using their funds toward larger aesthetic treatments to boost their results.”

Trend #10: Skincare Specialists jobs are growing

In the world of medical news, it makes sense that, with the increased popularity in MedSpas and the treatments they offer, there has also been an increase in skin care specialists jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that skin-care specialist jobs are expected to grow 17 percent by 2030, outpacing job growth in other categories.
