Dermal Fillers: Let’s Separate the Myths from the Truth Behind Great Results

When it comes to dermal fillers, there’s no shortage of opinions—and even more myths. From fears that filler will stretch the skin to the idea that “one syringe is enough to fix everything,” misinformation can make it hard to know what’s true. That’s why we’re breaking it all down with the help of our expert Houston-based Injector, Ava Crowell, BSN, RN.

In this article, we’ll explore what dermal fillers really are, what they can do, and – most importantly – the most common myths patients hear every day. You’ll learn why concerns like “filler will make me look fake” or “filler and Botox are basically the same” simply don’t hold up.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours without the need for surgery. While there are several types of fillers, HA, or hyaluronic acid fillers, are the most commonly used type of filler.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that binds water, keeping the skin plump, hydrated, and youthful. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are versatile, customizable, and reversible, making them a patient-favorite for everything from subtle lip enhancement to full-face rejuvenation. Juvederm and Restylane are the two most popular types of HA dermal fillers.

Common Myths About Dermal Fillers

According to Crowell, here are a few myths and the truth or “facts” about dermal fillers:

Myth 1: “Filler will make me look fake or overdone.”

Fact: “When done correctly by a skilled injector, filler enhances your natural features,” shares Crowell, “The goal is balance and subtle rejuvenation—not an unnatural look.”

Myth 2: “Filler and Botox are the same thing.”

Fact: Crowell clarifies that “they’re actually very different! Botox relaxes muscles to smooth dynamic wrinkles, while filler adds volume and structure. They often complement each other but serve different purposes.”

Myth 3: “Filler is super painful.”

Truth: Crowell points out that “most fillers contain lidocaine, and numbing cream is often used to keep you comfortable. Discomfort is minimal and usually very manageable.”

Myth 4: “One syringe is enough to transform everything.”

Truth: “One syringe = 1mL (about 1/5 of a teaspoon). It’s great for subtle tweaks, but full-face rejuvenation often requires multiple syringes—spread out safely over time.”

“I love that fillers allow us to restore volume that has been lost over time and naturally refresh and refine the face,” shares Crowell.

Myth 5: “All dermal fillers are the same.”

Truth: There are different types of dermal fillers. Some are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), while others are composed of calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, or polymethyl methacrylate.

Types of dermal fillers

In addition to HA fillers mentioned above, categories of dermal fillers include:

  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers: Add volume, fill in lines and wrinkles, and support facial balancing. HA fillers dissolve over time and can be reversed with an enzyme that’s injected into the treatment area.
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA): A biostimulatory filler that adds structure and stimulates collagen production.
  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA): Works gradually by stimulating collagen for long-lasting volume and skin tightening.
  • Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA): A semi-permanent filler made of microspheres that provide structure and long-term support.

Together, these filler options allow skilled injectors to tailor treatments to each patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals—always with the aim of natural, balanced results.

Expert tip: Always work with a skilled injector who will support you in achieving natural-looking results without looking overdone or too full
