Jawline Contouring and Slimming with Botox

blog-img

A well-defined jawline is often associated with beauty and confidence, but for those with an overly square or bulky jaw or jowls and neck lines, confidence can take a dive. Botox for jawline contouring has become a game-changer, offering a non-surgical solution to achieve a softer, more contoured look.

Jawline contouring and slimming with Botox is a safe, non-invasive solution for achieving a more contoured and balanced facial profile. Throughout this blog, we’ve covered how it works, who it’s best for, and what to expect from the treatment. Whether you’re looking to reduce the appearance of a square jaw, ease TMJ symptoms, or refine your overall look, Botox offers a subtle yet effective enhancement. As always, consulting with your injector is key to ensuring the best results tailored to your unique facial structure and aesthetic goals.

Botox for jawline contouring and slimming

You’d almost have to be living under a rock to not be familiar with the term Botox. Botox has been used for cosmetic use since 2002, at which time it was FDA-approved to treat forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.

Recently, it gained FDA approval to treat platysma bands – the bands connecting the neck and jaw. Botox is also used for several off-label uses, like:

  • Botox jaw slimming
  • Botox facial slimming
  • Treating bunny lines that run across the bridge of the nose
  • Lifting the edges of the eyebrows
  • Lifting the corners of the mouth

For this post, the focus is on how Botox is used for jawline contouring and slimming.

And, we turn to San Antonio-based Advanced Practice Nurse and Nurse Injector Carrie Moschitto and Nurse Injector Vanessa Sandoval to share their perspectives and insights on this innovative treatment.

How is Botox injected for jawline contouring and slimming?

Moschitto points out that Botox is well known for its ability to relax the muscles of the upper face. It can be utilized to slightly sculpt the brow and eye area to provide a more relaxed and awake look. This is done by selectively modifying the lifting and depressing forces of the upper face.

According to Moschitto, this same concept can be applied to the jawline:

“There are FDA-approved patterns for improving the jawline that focus on treating the platysma as well as off-label options that focus more on reducing volume in the masseters or reducing downward forces in the area of the DAO.

The FDA-approved pattern for the jawline focuses on reducing downward forces in the platysma muscle of the upper neck below the level of the jaw that blunt the jawline. By treating this area, the muscle relaxes and lifts up and in along the jaw.

Treating the masseter, on the other hand, can reduce volume in the area of the masseter, making the face appear more tapered in the lower third.

Treatment around the chin and mouth can lift the corners of the mouth and improve the chin contour, which complements or augments the effect of treatment of the neck.

Finally, the platysma extends into the tissue of the lower face above the level of the jaw and this area can also be treated to allow further lift.”

What are some additional off-label Botox uses?

In addition to some of the above-mentioned popular off-label uses for Botox, Moschitto adds the following to the list:

“Along the jaw specifically, Botox can be injected above the level of the mandible to lift the cheeks and lower face.  Around the mouth, Botox can provide a lift for the corners of the mouth and reduce the dimpling of the skin on the chin. That said, I think the most popular off-label Botox use is the lip flip.”

The lip flip is a treatment where a few units of Botox are injected just above the lip line. The treatment helps to soften the look of perioral lines and gives the lips a slightly upturned and fuller appearance.

What kind of results can be seen, and how long do they last?

Botox injections in the forehead area last an average of four months. The duration of results for Botox platysma treatments is similar. Platysma treatments also enhance one’s appearance in several ways.

“With platysma treatment, the patient can expect to see an improvement in the definition of the jaw, a reduction in the neck bands that are visible with grimacing expressions, and possibly a reduction in the appearance of jowls,” shares Moschitto, “In the studies, improvement was noted for 3 to 4 months post-procedure. Plus, with continued treatments on the recommended dosing schedule, many patients saw further improvement.”

“Individuals can expect a more defined jawline and smoother chin. Furthermore, a smoother and more youthful look to the neck can be appreciated when treating the platysma,” adds Sandoval.

Who is an ideal candidate for jawline slimming?

For general jawline slimming, Moschitto suggests that “good candidates will have defined neck bands with grimacing and good to moderate skin elasticity. Patients with more significant laxity, significant skin excess, or a more generous submental fat pad may see more subtle results.”

For the specific treatment of the DAO muscle, which is responsible for the downturned look of the mouth, Sandoval points out that “a good candidate is anyone with good to moderate skin elasticity. The subtle lift to the corners of the mouth is a game changer for many patients.”
