Most of us don’t think about aging until we can see it: a line that stays after we frown, a shadow under the eyes that concealer can’t quite hide, a jawline that looks a little saggier in photos than it used to. By the time those changes show up in the mirror, the shifts under the surface have been underway for years.
That’s the idea behind prejuvenation. Traditional skin rejuvenation corrects the signs of aging once they’ve settled in. Prejuvenation works earlier, slowing those changes before they become pronounced. The result is a face that looks like yours, rested and refreshed, for longer, with the goal of using less product and needing fewer treatments over time.
Prejuvenation Q&A with Bonnie Peikari
To explain what prejuvenation really means and why dermal fillers like Juvederm play a key role, we sat down with DermaTouch RN’s very own Houston-based Nurse Injector, Bonnie Peikari, RN, BSN. She also walks through the other treatments that round out a prevention-focused plan, from neuromodulators to laser skin resurfacing.
Q: What is meant by “prejuvenation” in the cosmetic field?
Peikari: Prejuvenation focuses on preventing the unwanted signs of aging, rather than waiting until your aesthetic concerns become more severe or pronounced. By beginning a comprehensive treatment plan at the first signs of lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, or hollowing and volume loss, we can more easily achieve and maintain natural-looking results, without having to use as many products or treatment modalities.
Q: How do dermal fillers support prejuvenation?
Peikari: Fat and bone loss begins much earlier than most people realize: twenties or thirties depending on the person’s genetics, lifestyle, and sun exposure history. Dermal fillers are the best option for replacing deeper structures that are essential to support the muscles, connective tissue, and skin above them.
One of the mechanisms your skin utilizes to stimulate collagen and tissue creation is actually achieved by putting strain on and stretching the skin, which happens naturally when the skin is tight and stretched over all of the layers below it. The earlier that volume loss is addressed, the better your skin thickness and elasticity will be over the long run.

What other treatments do you recommend to support prejuvenation?
Peikari: I believe in utilizing multiple treatment modalities to create the best and most customized plan for each client.
By treating overactive depressor muscles in the face with Tox (aka Botox), we can assist in maintaining bright and open eyes, support lip and chin projection, and maintain a more defined jawline.
With the help of biostimulators like Sculptra and Radiesse, we can address mild skin laxity before excess tissue gets continually folded during facial animation and deep lines and wrinkles are created.
And by adding lasers, resurfacing, and regular skin treatments, we can slow the gradual enlarging of congested pores, avoid permanent textural changes from prolonged redness and inflammation, and generally increase the amount of your life you get to feel confident in your own skin.
Q: Anything you’d like to add that you feel patients should know about skin rejuvenation?
Peikari: You only spend 30 to 60 minutes in my chair 3 to 4 times a year, so don’t expect to leave my room without homework. I cannot overstate the importance of sun avoidance and proper skincare.
Your TikTok or Amazon eye cream is doing little more than sitting on the surface of your skin and allowing your under-eye area to get darker and more wrinkled while the potent UV rays barrel through your car windows and turn off your collagen production, turn on your pigment production, and damage your DNA.
You will save hundreds to thousands of dollars and days to weeks of downtime and discomfort by making very simple changes to your daily routine.

Summary of Treatments for Skin Rejuvenation and Prejuvenation
- HA Dermal Fillers: Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers replace the volume lost as fat and bone gradually diminish, a process that can begin as early as your twenties or thirties. Products like Juvederm Voluma restore support to the deeper structures of the cheeks and midface, keeping the skin above them lifted and better hydrated.
- Biostimulators: Biostimulators such as Sculptra and Radiesse work differently from traditional fillers. Rather than adding volume right away, they prompt your body to build its own collagen over time. Used early, they firm mild skin laxity before loose tissue starts folding with everyday facial expressions and setting into deeper lines and wrinkles.
- Medical-Grade Skin Care: The treatments you receive in the office are only part of the picture. What you do every day matters just as much. Medical-grade skin care products, like the ones offered by SkinMedica, include active ingredients at concentrations designed to work below the skin’s surface, unlike many over-the-counter creams that mostly sit on top of it. Paired with consistent, daily sun protection, the right at-home routine protects your collagen, helps prevent pigmentation, and extends the results of in-office treatments.
- Neuromodulators: Neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport relax the overactive muscles that pull facial features downward over time. Treating these depressor muscles early helps keep the eyes clear and open, supports lip and chin projection, and maintains a more defined jawline. It also softens repeated movement that can etch lines into the skin.
- Energy Devices (Lasers, Sofwave, RF Microneedling): Energy-based treatments target skin quality from the inside out. Together, these treatments keep skin rejuvenation going between injectable appointments and help prevent the permanent textural changes that prolonged redness and inflammation can leave behind. Laser skin resurfacing improves texture and tone, addresses early sun damage, and helps keep pores from gradually enlarging. Sofwave uses ultrasound energy to stimulate new collagen and tighten mildly lax skin, with no downtime. RF microneedling pairs tiny micro-injuries with radiofrequency energy to boost collagen production and refine texture.
Summary of What Prejuvenation Addresses
Prejuvenation works best when it starts at the first signs of change, before those concerns become more pronounced and harder to correct. By dealing with these concerns early, prejuvenation makes natural-looking results easier to achieve and maintain, often with fewer products and treatments over time. A prejuvenation plan can target:
- Fine lines and wrinkles: softening early lines before repeated facial movement sets them into deeper creases.
- Volume loss and hollowing: replacing the fat and bone loss that begins in our twenties or thirties and gradually leaves the face looking tired or deflated.
- Skin laxity: firming mildly loose skin before it begins folding during everyday expressions.
- Downward pull of facial muscles: relaxing overactive muscles that, over time, can make the eyes look heavier, flatten the lips and chin, and soften the jawline.
- Pore size and texture: slowing the gradual enlargement of congested pores and preventing permanent textural changes caused by prolonged redness and inflammation.
- Sun damage: protecting against the UV exposure that breaks down collagen, triggers pigmentation, and darkens and creases the delicate under-eye area.
Ready to schedule your prejuvenation skin consultation?
Aging isn’t optional – it’s going to happen. But how and when it shows up on your face is more in your control than most people realize. As Peikari points out, when you restore lost volume early, soften overactive muscles with neuromodulators, and keep your skin’s texture healthy with treatments like laser resurfacing, you’ll need to do less later to look like yourself and feel good in your skin longer.
As Peikari puts it, your time in the treatment chair is only part of the plan. Daily sun protection and a medical-grade skincare routine do much of the heavy lifting between visits, and they’re among the simplest ways to protect your results and avoid spending more time and money down the road.
