If you’ve been thinking about lip filler but aren’t quite sure what to expect, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most popular aesthetic treatments we offer at DermaTouch RN, and one of the most asked-about. Whether you’re drawn to a subtle, natural enhancement or you’re ready for a more noticeable transformation, the key to a great outcome starts long before you ever sit in the treatment chair.
From choosing the right injector to understanding what your lips actually need, there’s more to a successful lip filler experience than most people realize. With the help of Houston-based Nurse Injector Ava Crowell, we break it all down so you can walk into your first appointment feeling informed, confident, and ready.
Why Do People Get Lip Fillers?
People come in for lip filler for all kinds of reasons, and no two consultations are exactly alike. Some patients want to restore the volume they’ve lost over time, because yes, our lips naturally thin as we age. Others were born with thinner lips and have always wanted a little more fullness. And some simply want better symmetry, because natural asymmetry in the lips is more common than most people realize.
Beyond the physical, there’s a confidence piece that’s hard to put a number on. When your lips feel balanced and proportionate to the rest of your face, it shows — in how you smile, how you carry yourself, how you feel walking out the door. Lip filler isn’t about chasing a trend or looking like someone else. At its best, it’s about feeling like a more confident, refreshed version of you.

How Can One Prepare for Their First Lip Filler Treatment?
According to Crowell:
“Patients can prepare for their first lip filler appointment by reviewing any and all medications they are taking and providing them to their medical provider before the treatment begins to avoid any contraindications for treatment, such as antibiotics.
You want to make sure to schedule your treatment at least 2 to 4 weeks before any big events where photos will be taken, in case you experience swelling and bruising, which is very common, in the two weeks following the treatment, as your lips heal. You also need to avoid dental visits and vaccinations for at least 1 month before and after the lip filler to prevent adverse reactions.”
Some additional tips to prepare for your first lip filler treatment include:
- Avoid alcohol and NSAIDs for a few days before treatment
- Research injectors to ensure you find one that has positive reviews, solid before and after photos, and the proper license and credentials
- Get clear on your lip filler goals, so you can share them with your prospective injector

What Can You Expect During Your First DTRN Lip Filler Treatment?
Here is what one can expect during their lip filler treatment according ot Crowell.
After checking in, the patient will have before-and-after photos taken downstairs, followed by the application of numbing cream for comfort. From there, once in the treatment room:
- The Nurse Injector begins by asking the patient about their goals for their lips and assessing the treatment area to identify any natural asymmetry and to ensure the tissue is intact and healthy for treatment.
- Once the patient feels confident and understands the realistic outcomes of the treatment, we will begin injections. With the topical numbing cream and the lidocaine present in the filler itself, most patients find the treatment fairly comfortable, feeling only a small pinch here and there.
- Once the treatment is over, we will provide aftercare education and follow-up information, and let the patient know what to expect during the two-week window following the treatment. We encourage the patient to call us with any questions or concerns or book a follow-up appointment, if necessary, to be seen in the clinic.
- The patient then checks out at the front desk and leaves.
Some swelling and bruising can occur after treatment, and it takes lip filler about two weeks to fully settle to see the final results.
Pro tip: Assuming you choose a reputable injector, be open and listen to them to help guide you with the best option for your lips. It’s also best to avoid too much filler initially – it’s better to build slowly over time for the best and most natural-looking outcome.
What Type and How Much Filler Do You Need?
“When it comes to the actual type of lip filler treatment, it is usually determined by the provider once we’re aware of the patient’s goals and take their natural lip shape and anatomy into consideration,” shares Crowell. “Thicker lip fillers may work beautifully for some lips, but others may need something softer and more subtle. Some patients may opt for a half syringe, which will yield super natural results, and others will opt for a full syringe for a more noticeable difference.”
It’s also important to note, as Crowell points out, that “lip filler is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, and that’s why going to an educated medical provider makes a huge difference.”

What Types of Lip Fillers Are There?
Today, most dermal fillers used for lip injections are hyaluronic acid (HA) based, and for good reason. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body naturally produces, which makes it well-tolerated and, importantly, reversible if needed. Popular HA dermal fillers you may have heard of include Juvederm and Restylane, each offering a range of formulas designed for different goals and lip types.
What that means for your treatment depends on your individual anatomy and what you’re hoping to achieve. As Crowell notes, a thicker filler might be ideal for building volume in one patient, while another patient’s lips may respond best to something softer and more pliable for a subtle, natural result. The amount matters too, where a half syringe can make a beautiful, barely-there difference, while a full syringe delivers a more noticeable enhancement.
This is exactly why the provider you choose matters so much. The right injector assesses your lip shape, tissue health, and goals first — and then recommends the filler that fits you, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
How Much Does Lip Filler Cost?
The cost of lip fillers depends on several factors, including the provider, location or market you’re in, type of filler, and the amount of filler used. Lip filler pricing typically ranges from $500 to $800 per syringe, depending on these factors. Some patients only need half a syringe to achieve their goals, which can significantly reduce costs.
It’s worth noting that price shouldn’t be the deciding factor when choosing where to go. Lip filler is a medical treatment performed in delicate tissue with real anatomy involved — the experience and training of your injector matters far more than finding the lowest price. Bargain filler from an underqualified provider can lead to complications that cost far more to correct than the original treatment ever would have.
When you’re evaluating cost, think about the full picture: the credentials of the person injecting you, the quality of the products being used, the consultation process, and whether the practice stands behind their work with proper follow-up care. That’s where the real value lives.
