What Is the Difference Between Botox and Dysport?

You’re likely familiar with Botox, which has been on the market for cosmetic use since 2002. A few years later in 2009, Dysport was also FDA approved for cosmetic use, being the first competitor on the market for Botox. There is now additional competitors to Botox and Dysport in the cosmetic industry—Xeomin and Jeaveau—that came on the market in the past few years.

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeaveau are all Botulinum Type A products. They all have a similar purpose, to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles of the forehead, between the brows (frown lines), and crow’s feet at the outside corner of the eyes.

When it comes to Botox and Dysport, at DermaTouch RN, we have some clients who love and stick with Botox, and some who enjoy the effects of Dysport better. Everyone’s different and can respond differently to different treatments.

Both Botox and Dysport are Neurotoxins — Botulinum Type A—that is used to relax muscles that cause crow’s feet and frown lines on the forehead. They’ve both been in use for years and have similar effects when used on patients.

How do Dysport and Botox differ?

Dysport is a smaller molecule, requiring more of it to get a similar result to Botox. Dysport also costs less, though due to the requirement of more units, the cost saving compared to Botox is minimal.

For some, Dysport has a slightly quicker effect that can be seen when compared to Botox (in theory, 2-5 days vs 4-6 days for Botox). Dysport also spreads to a wider area, or diffuses more, which can be a good thing in certain areas of the forehead, and not such a good thing in other areas. Each client is different as to how they respond to the treatment.

How do Botox and Dysport work?

Botox and Dysport are neurotoxins — Botulinum Type A—used to relax muscles that cause frown lines on the forehead and crow’s feet around the eyes. Once injected into the muscle, the muscles relax, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles improve.

Results of Dysport can be seen within 2 to 5 days and last for 3 to 4 months, on average. The results of Botox can be seen within 4 to 5 days and last 3 to 4 months on average. Results vary based on the treatment area, the number of units used, and the chemistry of the patient.

As results begin to wear off, additional injections are required to maintain results. Future treatments might require more or less of the product to achieve similar results.

The skill of the injector is more important than the product used.

Whether you’re using  Dysport or Botox, what’s most important is finding a skilled injector who understands face structure and how each product functions in the body. At DermaTouch RN, we have injected literally 1000s of vials of Dysport and Botox combined and are confident in the results our practitioners provide.

  • Dysport has been shown to have a slightly quicker effect when compared to Botox (2-5 days vs. 4-6 days for Botox), though every patient is different.
  • Dysport spreads to a wider area, or diffuses more, so it’s important for the injector to be skilled and familiar with how Dysport works when compared t Botox.

Why might I need different amounts of Botox or Dysport during follow-up treatments?

  • When the neurotoxins are injected into the muscle, the nerve endings are altered. Over time, one might need more or less of the product to achieve desired results compared to previous treatments in the same treatment areas.

Why does it seem like the effects around my eyes to treat crow’s feet wear off quicker than on my forehead?
