What Is Angel Dusting (aka Fairy Dusting)?
Schedule a skincare consultation today!
Angel dusting (also known as fairy dusting) has become a growing trend in the cosmetic world – one that can easily mislead consumers into thinking they’re getting more than they actually are. So how can you be sure the products you’re using truly deliver what they promise?
When you hear “fairy dust,” it might bring to mind something magical that’s light, effortless, and transformative. Unfortunately, fairy dusting in the cosmetic world isn’t quite so… magical. Instead, it’s a marketing tactic designed to make products appear more effective than they really are, often leaving consumers disappointed with the results.
To better understand what fairy dusting is, with tips on how to avoid it, we turn to San Antonio-based Aesthetician Stephanie Guillen.
What Is Fairy Dusting (aka Angel Dusting) in the Cosmetic and Skincare World?
“Fairy dusting” is when a product sprinkles in trendy ingredients, like peptides, growth factors, or antioxidants, just so the brand can brag about them on the label,” shares Guillen.
“However, there aren’t enough of those ingredients in the product to actually do anything for your skin. It looks cute on the ingredient list and sounds impressive in marketing, but in reality, it’s just giving minimal effort [while also attempting to grab your attention]. So, while the product may say it has all the good stuff, the concentration is often too low to deliver real, visible results.”
Essentially, fairy dusting is a marketing tactic used by brands to boast about premium ingredients without actually including enough of those ingredients to make a difference – they’re creating cheaper formulas on the inside, while trying to give them an effective or luxurious brand appeal on the outside. It’s especially common in toners, cleaners, and moisturizers.
How Can You Avoid Fairy Dusting?
According to Guillen, “if you don’t want to get played by pretty packaging and big promises, here’s how to stay smart:”
- Check the skincare ingredients list like a pro: Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest concentration. So if your star ingredient is hanging out at the bottom of the ingredient list… yeah, it’s just there for decoration.
- Don’t fall for buzzwords: “Infused with peptides” sounds fancy but how much is in the product, though? That’s the real question. (Hint: refer to Tip #1 above and review the skincare ingredients list.)
- Go for results, not hype: Medical-grade or clinically backed skincare is much more likely to actually do what it says it will.
- Ask your aesthetician (Hi, that’s a professional like me!): Your aesthetician can guide you toward products that are worth your money and your skin.
- Look for research: Consider brands that provide clinical studies or ingredient percentages. We love transparency!
Pro Tip: SkinMedica is an excellent option for high-quality AHA/BHA cleansers, the best hyaluronic acid serum, excellent anti-aging ingredients, and more.

Final Thoughts on Fairy Dusting
Guillen points out that “not all skincare is created equal, and just because it’s trending does not mean it’s effective. Real results come from the right ingredients, in the right amounts, used consistently. So instead of chasing every new ‘it” product, focus on what actually works for your skin.”
And if you’re unsure where to start, that’s exactly where we come in at DermaTouch RN. We’re here to help you cut through the noise, avoid the marketing hype, and build a skincare routine that actually delivers. In other words, we will help you take the guesswork and fairy dusting out of your routine!
