Whether you are welcoming Fall from a beautiful location where the air carries a crisp chill and the leaves are turning beautiful shades, or it’s simply your calendar that is “TELLING” you that Autumn is“officially” here you can be CERTAIN that your skin will “TELL” you. Yes your skin will “announce” with its subtle changes that indeed the seasons, “they are a changin.’”  And, you’ll need to determine the best skincare routine.

Your skin is your largest organ, and your most sensitive. It is your protection against the elements and it prefers “consistency.” Your epidermis will easily “pick up on“ the subtle shifts in moisture, temperature, barometric pressure, air quality and more as one season slips into another. Updating your Fall skin care is important as your skin begins to feel and show these effects of drops in humidity AND temperature. Skin dryness, tightness and even acne flare ups can be a problem.

But not to worry! You and your skin are not at the mercy of the changing seasons! You can take proactive steps so that your skin can “fall” with ease into an updated Fall skin care plan

What is the best skincare routine for fall?

Hydration.

Do you think that hydrating the skin and moisturizing the skin are the same thing? If you said yes, then think again. Hydrating the skin provides a supple and plumping appearance. Since our bodies are primarily made of water, hydration helps to maintain our body’s hydration level. Drinking plenty H2O is one way to boost hydration.

Another way is to use a hydrator with hyaluronic acid (HA). Our naturally occurring HA decreases as we age, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. To counteract these effects, use an HA hydrator, like SkinMedica’s HA5. It provides impressive results with instant smoothing in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish hyaluronic acid.

Throw out the old and in with the new (cleaners and moisturizer)

Increased dryness occurs during the fall and winter months due to the weather change. Your skin can become dryer and flakier. Switch to a moisturizing cleaner, such as a cream-based cleaner, to minimize dryness through the fall and winter. A moisturizer that locks in moisture is also essential. SkinMedica has some great moisturizing lotions and gentle cleansers for all skin types to use during the fall and winter months.

Exfoliate away dullness

Who wants flaky and dull skin in the fall and winter? Noone! Unfortunately, it is common with the changing of the seasons. A mild exfoliator that also moisturizes can help. An exfoliator that provides moisture can help you maintain softness. With really dry skin, exfoliate only once a week.

Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) products are great exfoliators.  Mild AHA products can be good for fall months. They love water and improve the skin’s moisture content. Mild BHA products are suitable for acne-prone skin and penetrate deeper into the skin than AHAs do. BHAs love oil, so they bypass oil in the pores and dissolve sebum and dead skin cells that increase the likelihood of acne. Some cleansing and moisturizing products combine AHA and BHA.

A word of caution: If you’re using retinoids, AHAs and BHAs should not typically be used in conjunction with them. Always use caution, read labels, and speak with your clinician about using these products.

Tend to and prevent chapped lips

SkinMedica’s HA5 Smooth and Plump lip system is a great treatment to hydrate your lips all year round. Lips can easily get chapped during the dry fall and winter months. There are some great lip exfoliators available these days you can try.

Wear sunscreen

Sunscreen should be worn all year round. It is a vital skin care element to protect the skin from premature aging and sun damage. Wear a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. SkinMedica and Elta MD both have great options.

How do I update my nighttime skincare routine?

Update your nighttime skincare routine similarly to how you update your morning skincare routine. Cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize with the right products for fall.

What treatments can complement my fall skincare routine?

Botox Injections

Botox injections help you maintain your youthful appearance by improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox is FDA approved to treat forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet around the outside corner of the eyes. It can also be used as an off-label treatment to smooth the chin, smooth out bunny lines across the bridge of the nose, lift the corner of the eyebrows, and lift the corners of the lips.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, like Juvederm, help keep your skin hydrated with hyaluronic acid (HA). HA fillers smooth and fill in moderate to severe lines and wrinkles of the face, such as nasolabial folds. Juvederm Voluma can also be used to contour the chin and cheeks. Lip filler is perfect to add volume to the lips and smooth the perioral lines around the mouth.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a collagen induction treatment to help improve the overall appearance of the skin. It helps to treat fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, ruddiness, dullness, large pores, and more. Microneedling is a great treatment to supplement your fall skin care routine.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments, like the Halo and BBL (Broadband light) treatments, can do wonders for the skin. They help to improve skin clarity, reduce lines and wrinkles, reduce age spots, reduce scarring, and more! Plus, the fall is the perfect time to try a laser treatment, as explained in the next section.

Why is it good to try laser treatments in the fall?

You often have to remain out of the sun leading up to and following a laser treatment. Therefore, it’s best to get a cosmetic laser treatment during the fall or winter. It is generally easier for us to stay out of the sun during that time. Plus, a fall laser treatment helps to reduce the appearance of the recent summer’s skin damage.
