Moderna and Pfizer have each released an FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine. This is positive news for many. However, questions and concerns about the vaccine’s interaction with dermal fillers, Botox, and other cosmetics procedures have developed. The purpose of this post is to address these concerns.

COVID-19 and Dermal Filler Interaction

While rare, a few documented cases of adverse reactions to the COVID vaccine have been reported in those with dermal fillers. Lip angioedema, where fluid builds-up and causes swelling in the deeper skin layers, and localized facial swelling where fillers have been injected have occurred. In all instances to date, the side effects were resolved after steroid or antihistamine (e.g., Benadryl) treatments were administered.

Allow for a Two-Week Waiting Period

When receiving any vaccine or immunization, we suggest waiting a minimum of two weeks before and after to schedule your dermal filler appointment. Vaccines trigger an immune response in the body. The immune response can increase the risk of adverse side effects, however rare, following dermal filler (e.g., Juvederm, Restylane) or neuromodulator (e.g., Botox, Dysport) appointments.

The same holds true for dental appointments. Following a dental cleaning or procedure, such as a filling, crown placement, or root canal, the work can trigger an immune response in the body. We suggest waiting a minimum of two weeks before or after your dental appointment to schedule your dermal filler or Botox appointment.

There is always a risk of swelling and rare adverse side effects following a dermal filler or neuromodulator treatment. The two-week waiting period is a precaution to reduce the likelihood that such side effects might occur in connection with immunizations or dental appointments.

Common Side Effects from Dermal Fillers

Bruising and swelling are common following dermal filler appointments. These side effects generally subside within two to four weeks. Redness and tenderness are also common and typically subside within a few days.

Additional Dermal Filler Pre-treatment Tips

In addition to avoiding immunizations and dental appointments within two weeks of your dermal filler appointment:

  • Reschedule your appointment if you have a rash or cold sore in the area being injected.
  • Reschedule your appointment if you are sick.
  • Avoid scheduling your dermal filler or neuromodulator appointment two to four weeks before special events.
  • Speak with your injector if you are taking blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medications, including NSAIDS, as they can increase the risk of swelling after dermal filler injections.
