Botox and dermal fillers, like Juvederm, are the two most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments available, though, many confuse the two and don’t understand the difference. When asking if dermal fillers are better than Botox, it’s good to know that the two work very differently in the body and treat different areas of the face. They are actually great complements to each other to help you turn back the hands of time. Read on to learn more about Botox vs. dermal fillers.

Botox vs. Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers fill in lines and wrinkles

The most popular dermal fillers, like Juvederm, are made of hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to fill in lines and wrinkles and add volume to the face, such as the cheeks. Some Juvederm fillers, specifically Volbella and Ultra XC, are also used to add volume to the lips. Volbella is also great to help minimize the appearance of perioral lines around the lips. Voluma is the perfect option for cheek and chin balancing and augmentation.

With time, the body will absorb the filler, at which time additional filler will need to be injected to maintain results. Results are immediate upon injection. Dermal fillers for acne scars, loss of volume, chin and lip augmentation, and to fill in lines and wrinkles are popular treatment choices.

Juvederm lasts up to two years

Made of hyaluronic acid, Juvederm fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the amount and type of filler used, the area being treated, and individual body chemistry. Dermal filler results are immediate, though it can take up to two weeks for swelling to subside and the filler to settle in to see what results will look like for the long-term.

Botox reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Botox is a neuromodulator that, when injected into muscles, paralyzes them. The muscles then relax and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox is FDA-approved to improve the appearance of forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It’s injected into the muscles and within 5 to 14 days, the muscles relax, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. Results last for approximately four months, at which time, more Botox injections will be required to maintain results.

Many people’s initial goal is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and add volume, for which Juvederm and Botox are fabulous treatment options. They are also great complementary treatments to each other.

Work with an injector backed by numbers and experience

When you’re in the market and considering Botox vs. dermal fillers, such as Juvederm or Restylane, you want to know that you’re in good hands. You want to be able to walk into an establishment with confidence knowing you’ll walk out with the results you desire. The goal is to do your homework and ask the right questions to find a MedSpa or cosmetic service provider you are comfortable selecting to handle your dermal filler or Botox injections.

The skill level and experience of injectors can vary greatly. Below are some questions to consider when you’re in the market for an experienced injector.

  • How many years has the establishment been in business and what’s its reputation? You want to find a MedSpa or aesthetic services provider backed by at least 5 years in the business with a positive reputation. You can do research online to find reviews or ask for referrals.
  • How many procedures has the practitioner completed on individuals? You want to find a provider that has several successful procedures on his or her resume!
  • How many years of experience does the practitioner have in the services you’re seeking? Someone with at least one to two years of experience is ideal.
  • Do you tend to take a conservative approach to fillers and Botox? Each injector has a different approach to looking at facial anatomy and what is needed in way of Botox vs. dermal fillers, as well. Some are more conservative and prefer to begin with a smaller amount vs. inject too much filler that a client might not be happy with. It’s easier to add filler vs. remove it.

Doctors are not necessarily better than nurses

We’ve shared this before, but to reiterate, just because someone has the title of Doctor does not mean he or she will be better equipped to inject fillers or Botox compared to a nurse. Nurses often have more experience in administering fillers and Botox when compared to doctors, so again, ask to see how many successful procedures or years of experience the individual has before choosing a doctor over a nurse for your cosmetic procedures.
