3 Questions to Ask Your Provider Before You Get Lip Filler Injections
Considering lip filler for the first time? Read here to learn about lip filler injections and questions you should ask your provider before treatment.
Lip filler results live and die by what happens before the needle ever touches your skin. At DermaTouch RN, our team believes the consultation is where trust is built – not rushed through as a formality. Nurse Injector Vanessa Sandoval shares the three questions and considerations every patient should ask before booking a lip treatment, so you walk into your appointment (and out of it) feeling confident, informed, and excited about your results.
What Is Lip Filler?
First things first, what is lip filler?
Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable used to add volume, shape, and definition to the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already produces naturally — it draws in moisture and creates a soft, hydrated fullness that looks and feels natural. At DermaTouch RN, we offer Juvederm and Restylane for lip enhancement because of their smooth consistency and predictable, long-lasting results, depending on your goals and lip anatomy.

Juvederm for Lip Filler Injections
Not all fillers are created equal, and the Juvederm line offers several formulations tailored to different lip goals:
- Juvederm Ultra XC: One of the most popular choices for lip augmentation, Ultra XC is a smooth-consistency gel designed to add noticeable volume and fullness. It’s a great option for patients wanting fuller, plumper lips with natural movement.
- Juvederm Ultra Plus XC: A slightly thicker formulation than Ultra XC, this option is often used for patients who want more structure and volume, or who have more significant lip asymmetry to correct.
- Juvederm Volbella XC: Designed for a softer, more subtle enhancement, Volbella is ideal for patients seeking natural-looking definition and hydration rather than dramatic volume. It’s also known for smoothing vertical lip lines.
At DermaTouch RN, your provider will recommend the specific lip filler formulation based on your natural lip shape, the amount of volume you’re looking for, and how your tissue responds to filler — which ties right back into why that consultation conversation matters so much.
What Are the Three Questions to Ask Before Any Lip Treatment?
Sandoval points out that the consultation matters just as much as the injection itself. Here are the three questions and considerations she recommends to discuss with a provider “before letting anyone touch your lips for lip filler injections:”
- Ask to see a portfolio of the injector’s work. “Every injector has their own style and technique, and you want to make sure that the injector can accommodate your goals.”
- Ask what volume they are recommending and why. “Ask how much lip filler they’re actually using. Every lip shape is different, and you want to make sure that you and your provider are on the same page.”
- Make sure your goals are part of the conversation from the start. “Talk about your goals, not what someone else’s reference photo looks like.”
In relation to point three, Sandoval shares:
“I see this all the time when patients come in, and they show me a photo of someone who has a completely different lip shape and someone who can actually hold more filler than they can. It’s good not to compare yourself with others, because some people need more definition, some people need more shape, some people need more volume, and some people need projection. Everyone is different, and [lip filler injections] are based on your particular goals and also what your lip shape is naturally.”
Sandoval emphasizes that “if the injector can’t answer these questions calmly, then find someone who can.”

What Age Do People Begin Lip Filler?
There’s no single “right age” to start lip filler; it comes down to your individual goals and anatomy, not a number. Some patients in their early twenties seek filler to enhance naturally thin lips or improve symmetry. In contrast, others don’t consider it until later, often to help restore volume lost to natural aging.
What matters more than age is talking with your provider about what you want your lips to look like, what your natural shape can support, and what a conservative, natural-looking approach might involve. That’s exactly why the consultation — not just the injection — is where the real work happens.
Ready to Schedule a Lip Filler Consultation?
The bottom line? A provider worth trusting will never rush you through your questions or their answers.
A provider who welcomes these questions — and takes the time actually to answer them — is one who’s invested in your outcome, not just your appointment slot.
If you’re ready to have this conversation for yourself, schedule your lip filler injection consultation with our team at DermaTouch RN. We’ll walk through your goals, your lip shape, and what’s realistic for you — no reference photos of someone else’s lips required.
