Treatments to Celebrate National Skin Care Awareness Month

September is National Skin Care Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to celebrate skin care and discuss skin care options. Most of us want to look and feel our best and to do so, turn to aesthetic and cosmetic treatments like Houston Botox and Houston Juvederm dermal filler treatments.
Botox helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the outside corners of the eyes. Juvederm helps to fill in lines and wrinkles and add volume to the face. Both are complementary treatments to reduce the signs of aging. There are many other awesome skin care treatments to treat the appearance of the outside layer of the skin by going “skin deep” to stimulate collagen productions, reduce the appearance of scarring, reduce hyperpigmentation, and improve skin tone and texture. Chemical peels, microneedling, and PRP (platelet-rich plasma treatments) are examples of such treatments.
Chemical Peels
What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels utilize specially blended chemical solutions to exfoliate and remove damaged skin. Chemical face peels are great options to treat acne, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and other skin conditions that originate in the deep and middle layers of the skin.
Who is an ideal candidate for a chemical peel?
Chemical peel intensity varies depending on the chemical peel solution used. They come in light, medium, and deep levels. At DermaTouch RN, we use SkinMedica’s Rejuvenize Peel (moderate to deep), Vitalize Peel (mild to moderate), and Illuminize Peel (mildest). We also use VI Peel Precision Plus as our deepest peel option, ideal for treating conditions like Melasma.
The Houston chemical peel chosen for your condition will depend on the condition being treated and your skin type. Chemical peels are safe for the majority of skin textures and types. However, if you are pregnant, you should avoid chemical peels, and if you have sensitive skin, another treatment might be more appropriate for you.
What is a chemical peel treatment like?
Your skin is cleansed prior to the chemical peel solution being applied. The solution remains on the skin for a while, after which a neutralizing solution is applied to stop the chemical process. If your chemical peel is to treat and reduce acne scarring, the chemical peel solution might be applied to isolated treatment areas vs. the entire face.
Is there any downtime with chemical peels?
Medium to deep Houston chemical peels require some downtime, whereas light chemical peels generally do not. Your practitioner will (or should) thoroughly explain your aftercare and recovery time during your chemical peel consultation.
How often do I need a chemical peel to maintain results?
Deep chemical peels typically provide the maximum level of results and can’t be repeated. Medium chemical peels can be repeated every six months, and light chemical peels can be repeated monthly. An individualized treatment plan will be provided for you based on your skin care goals and skin type.

Microneedling
What is microneedling?
Houston microneedling treatments, also referred to as collagen induction therapy, create perforations in the skin that stimulates new collagen growth; the perforations are repaired with new collagen fibers. With the help of microneedling, the collagen that’s lost due to aging and sun damage is restored.
What types of microneedling are there?
The SkinPen II treatment is the traditional microneedling treatment. SkinPen treatments average about $250 per treatment, with package deals available at many MedSpas like DermaTouch RN.
Vivace is a newer form of microneedling that incorporates radiofrequency. Microneedling Radiofrequency combines thermal energy with collagen stimulation to tighten the skin and improve the appearance of the skin for a more youthful look. Radiofrequency energy tightens skin tissue and stimulates collagen, while microneedling creates the perforations that also stimulate collagen production. A microneedling radiofrequency treatment costs between $600 and $1000 per session depending on the area treated. Package deals are often available at many MedSpas, similar to SkinPen treatments.
Who is an ideal candidate for microneedling?
Microneedling and microneedling radiofrequency is safe for the majority of skin types, textures, and tones. Treatments can reduce hyperpigmentation, scarring, signs of aging, and sun damage. Pregnant women should avoid microneedling radiofrequency and consider stand-alone microneedling treatments, like the SkinPen.
Is there any downtime after a microneedling treatment?
Microneedling radiofrequency treatments, like Vivace, require no downtime. Most patients return to their normal daily routines immediately following treatment. You might experience some swelling, tenderness, and redness after a microneedling treatment, like SkinPen, but most patients return to their daily routine without restrictions after treatment.
How long will microneedling results last?
Your treatment plan will be based on your desired results and the current state of your skin. Results for both microneedling and microneedling radiofrequency treatments generally last for up to one year following treatment. As with any cosmetic treatment, results vary between patients.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatments
What is PRP?
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is plasma derived from your own blood. The plasma is incorporated with skin care treatments to accelerate healing time and tighten the skin. PRP treatments can be combined with microneedling treatments by layering the PRP on the skin after completing the microneedling treatment portion. PRP is also sometimes injected into the skin and is frequently used to stimulate hair growth in balding areas.
DermaTouch RN September Special: Add PRP to any microneedling (Vivace or SkinPen) treatment for $199 ($150 for forever young members).
