It is common knowledge that Botox makes you look younger, along with other popular cosmetic treatments, by improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles. And, improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles makes us feel better and more confident about our appearance.

With that said, though wrinkles often get a bad name, not all wrinkles are bad. Your face is unique to you, and your facial expressions are chalked full of information. Frowning, smiling, furrowing your brow, raising your eyebrows, and so on, provide information and highlight your personality—your sadness, your joy, your appreciation, your humility.

Without expressions, your face would void of personality, and who would want that?!

When we make facial expressions, dynamic wrinkles form. Common dynamic wrinkles include smile lines, frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet at the outside corner of each eye.

Dynamic wrinkles disappear as quickly as they appear. When you relax your face after making facial expressions, the dynamic wrinkles relax, as well.

Over time, however, dynamic wrinkles become static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are wrinkles that do not go away. In our late 20s and 30s, we begin to see static wrinkles form. Static wrinkles are often found on the neck, bridge of the nose, and around the mouth.

The repetitive dynamic movement of facial muscles progressively forms permanent wrinkles that get deeper over time. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen and elastin, which increases the chances of wrinkle formation. This also contributes to dynamic wrinkles becoming static wrinkles.

Smile lines, frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet eventually become static wrinkles, as well. Frown lines are often referred to as 11 lines or Botox 11 lines.

Wrinkles from sun damage

Sun exposure is the number one cause of skin damage and lines and wrinkles. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun impact the skin. It can lead to sun damage, skin cancer, brown spots, broken capillaries, and lines and wrinkles.

Collagen and elastin, as well as hyaluronic acid, decrease as we age. These components help to add volume to our skin. They also help our skin repair more quickly. As we age, we are more prone to the formation of lines and wrinkles and a loss of volume. Also, our bodies don’t recover as quickly from sun damage and static wrinkles can form.

Treatments for dynamic and static wrinkles

There are several cosmetic treatments available to treat dynamic and static wrinkles. Botox, dermal fillers, skin care products, and laser treatments all help turn back the hands of time and improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Botox makes you look younger

Botox makes you look younger on several fronts. Botox is a neuromodulator that is FDA-approved to treat forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. Off-label uses of Botox include treating bunny lines across the bridge of the nose, cobblestone chin, lines around the corners of the mouth, and lifting the eyebrows.

When injected into the muscles, Botox paralyzes the muscles. As a result, the muscles relax, and there is a reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It takes Botox 5 to 14 days to take effect. Effects last for approximately 3 to 4 months. Once the Botox wears off, you need additional Botox injections to maintain results.

Botox 11 lines form between the eyebrows right above the nose. These are what we refer to as frown lines. The vertical lines that form from frown lines are sometimes called 1, 11, or 111 lines, depending on the number and severity of the lines.

Lines and wrinkles that form as a result of dynamic muscle movement can be treated with Botox. Botox does not work well on static wrinkles caused by sun damage. Botox also helps prevent new wrinkles from forming by minimizing the dynamic muscle movement of the muscles in which it is injected.

Dermal Fillers fill in lines and wrinkles

Where it is true that Botox makes you look younger, dermal fillers, like Juvederm, do, too. Dermal fillers are great complementary treatments to Botox. Botox is typically used for the forehead region of the face. Dermal fillers can be used for static and dynamic wrinkles on other areas of the face.

When injected into the skin, dermal fillers fill in lines and wrinkles and add volume to the face. Nasolabial folds and lines around the lips are examples of the lines and wrinkles dermal fillers can treat. Lines across the bridge of the nose and in the chin area can also be filled with dermal fillers.

Laser Treatments turn back the hands of time

Laser treatments use light therapy to reduce the signs of aging. Treatments like the Halo and BBL (Broadband Light) help reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, broken capillaries, and age spots. Laser therapy is the perfect treatment for both dynamic and static wrinkles and complementary treatments to Botox and dermal fillers.

Quality Skin Care is protective, preventative, and reactive

Using proper skin care is essential to maintain skin health. Skin care can be protective, preventative, and reactive in treating dynamic and static wrinkles. Skin care products with HA, BHA, AHA, growth factors, and retinol are good options to treat lines and wrinkles. It’s also a good idea to use sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection at all times throughout the day.

SkinMedica and Elta MD offer great sunscreen options. SkinMedica also provides preventative and reactive skincare products and treatments that are backed by science and proven results.
