Millions around the world use Botox to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, appear more youthful, and improve their overall appearance. First FDA-approved in 2002 for cosmetic use, Botox is now the most popular, minimally invasive cosmetic treatment on the market.

What are the benefits of Botox?

People love the many benefits of Botox. Botox uses include improving the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and frown lines. Aside from these FDA-approved cosmetic uses for Botox, off-label cosmetic Botox uses include smoothing cobblestone chin, lifting the corners of the brows, lifting the corners of the lips, and thinning out the jaw line.

How does Botox work?

Botox is a neuromodulator that is injected into the muscle. Once injected, Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscle. When paralyzed, the muscle freezes, which relaxes the muscle and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Over time, Botox wears off, and muscle movement returns. As muscle movement returns, wrinkles will begin to appear again, at which time, additional Botox units can be injected to maintain Botox results.

What can I expect during my Botox appointment?

When you arrive for Botox injections, you’ll likely be directed to have photos taken after checking in and before your treatment. A technician or your injector might take your photos. A numbing cream or ice might be used to numb your treatment areas for an improved experience, as well.

During your Botox treatment, the injector will assess the amount of Botox required for your desired results. If you’re getting treated in the forehead or the glabella area, you’ll be asked to lift your brows or furrow your brow, respectively. If you’re attempting to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, you’ll be asked to smile. These actions allow the Botox injector to assess how much Botox you need and where the Botox needs to be injected based on your specific wrinkle pattern and facial structure.

Once an assessment is made, the injector will get the Botox amount required, fill a syringe, and inject the Botox. Botox injections are relatively painless. The stick of the needle being injected at the injection site might sting a little. You might also feel the Botox being injected into the muscle, though the pain generally comes and goes quickly.

What can I expect after Botox?

You’ll be able to resume normal activity after Botox injections. Bruises and slight swelling at the injection site might occur and generally resolves within a few days following treatment.

Many see results within five days after Botox, with full results seen within two weeks following treatment. Results typically last for four to five months for the forehead and glabella regions. Because of the muscles’ frequent movement around the eyes, Botox results fade more quickly around the outside corner of the eyes. As Botox results fade, additional Botox injections are required to maintain results.

How many units of Botox will I need?

The number of Botox units needed varies between individuals. However, Allergan, the pharmaceutical company behind Botox, has provided some generalized number of units per FDA-approved treatment area.

Forehead Lines

The generalized number of units of Botox is 20 to treat forehead lines.

 “11” Lines

The lines that form in the glabellar region, or region between the eyes, are often called “1,” “11,” or “111” lines. The generalized number of units of Botox is 20 to treat frown lines.

Forehead Lines and Frown Lines

Frown lines and forehead lines are often treated together. The generalized number of units of Botox to treat frown lines and forehead lines together is 40.

Crow’s Feet

The generalized number of units of Botox is 24 to treat crow’s feet. That breaks down to 12 units per eye.

Off-Label Uses

There isn’t a published generalized amount prescribed for off label uses of Botox. However, practitioners that have experience in treating for off-label uses will be able to provide you with the amount they believe you will need.

A common number shared by practitioners to thin the jawline, or Masseter region, ranges from 15 to 50 units per lower cheek area. For an eyebrow lift, 2 to 5 units of Botox per eye are often used. Bunny lines, or lines across the bridge of the nose (nasalis lines), are often treated with 5 to 10 units of Botox. A dimpled or cobblestone chin is usually treated with 2 to 6 units, and 3 to 6 units are commonly used to life the corners of the mouth.

Will I always need the same number of Botox units?

The number of Botox units you need for the follow-up treatments could be more or less than your first treatment or prior treatments. It’s common for individuals to need fewer Botox units for follow-up treatments over time, though that is not always the case. Muscle movement, individual body chemistry, and treatment area are all variables that play a part in how quickly Botox results wear off and how many units one might need to maintain results.

How long will my Botox treatment take?

Botox treatments typically take less than 15 minutes. If it’s your first treatment, you’ll want to allow for more time to ask questions and for the injector to walk you through how Botox works.
